Steam to Diesel: Jim Fredrickson's Railroading Journal
By Jim Fredrickson
From the publisher: In 1943, old hands at Tacoma’s Union Station probably didn't think much of the idea of hiring a green, 16-year-old kid. But with so many men away at war, the labor shortage was critical and any new worker was welcome. Jim Fredrickson didn’t disappoint. From this humble start, he flourished as a train dispatcher extraordinaire on the Northern Pacific’s Tacoma Division in Washington State.
Jim’s . . . career spanned a period of far-reaching technological changes—from steam to diesel, from parcel freight to containers, and from semaphore to radio. Being a life-long photographer, Jim got it all down on film.
He also took shots of the NP’s great competing lines—especially the Milwaukee and Great Northern—and the successors, Burlington Northern and Amtrak. Jim crossed the border into Canada to photograph the Canadian Pacific, BC Electric, and Canadian National as well. Today, his collection of regional railroad photographs and historical memorabilia is unparalleled. Steam to Diesel presents some of the best.

Sternwords and Bowlines
By Richard Duval '77
From the author: To me, wooden boats speak volumes about dreams and disasters. That's what this book of images seeks to tell. From marinas and waterways throughout the Northwest, I looked for boats with stories. Boats with hulls bent, beat and burnished from a lifetime of near misses; simple rowboats and skiffs that reflect the water's light as a liquid mirror in a perfectly still hand; and polished wooden hulls that speak of a loving hand that lavished hours of salt and sweat. Such boats—sturdy and shaky craft—tell a story.

Washington's Historical Courthouses
By Ray Graves '50
Ray Graves’s book, Washington’s Historic Courthouses, is a wonderful pictorial survey of the proud cultural and architectural heritage of the state of Washington. It contains beautiful photographs by Erick Erickson, a thoughtful introduction by Chief Justice Gerry Alexander, and a very interesting discussion of the historic development of each of the state’s 39 county seats and the architectural qualities of each courthouse built before 1930.
