Starting this fall, undergraduates can major in organic
agriculture, one of five majors in a new agricultural and food
systems degree. Washington State University is the first university
in the country to offer such a major.
The aim of the new major is to give students a broad
understanding of agricultural systems and the diversity of
Washington agriculture, says coordinator Cathy Perillo. A demanding
curriculum will give students a solid grounding in basic sciences
and communication skills as well as specialized training in organic
practices.
The major includes a summer practicum on WSU’s organic farm,
located on the east edge of campus. Students will get experience
growing, harvesting, and marketing organic produce.
